Pitchfork Approach to EducationThe Center teaches courses that bring together insights from many disciplines and encourages research and engagement projects aimed at solving real-world health problems, from the local to the global level. The Center believes that the use of a Pitchfork (three-prong) approach to evolutionary medicine education – with university curriculum, continuing professional education, and massive open online courses – maximizes the opportunities for impacting health.
Discovering Evolutionary Explanations for DiseaseThe Center for Evolution & Medicine supports interdisciplinary research by bridging the many different disciplines (e.g. infectious disease, genetics, clinical medicine, veterinary medicine, anthropology, psychology, etc.) where relevant research takes place. Research at the Center demonstrates the power of evolutionary biology to address problems in medicine and public health. The ASU Center for Evolution & Medicine is a university-wide Presidential Initiative whose mission is to improve human health by establishing evolutionary biology as an essential basic science for medicine, worldwide. The Center brings leading scientists to ASU to join existing faculty in research that demonstrates the power of evolutionary biology to address problems in medicine and public health. The new courses and degrees they create will begin to meet the growing demand for such experiences, and will educate a generation of future researchers and health professionals.
