Kenneth Chiou will be talking about his research at this CEMinar. Kenneth is a postdoctoral researcher at Arizona State University. As a primate biologist, his research centers on the intersection of behavior, ecology and genomics. He is interested in the evolution of populations; in particular, he aims to understand how demography, behavior and environmental variation contribute to the past and present spatial distribution of genetic variation in primates. He is also interested in the impacts of social systems and social strategies on health and aging in primates. As an anthropologist, he is ultimately interested in using extant primate populations as models of human evolution and health.

Aside from his primary research goals, he is also interested in informatic methods for collecting, managing and standardizing data in field primatology. Towards this end, he has experimented with database development and, particularly, with software development for data collection in the field. As a fieldworker, he is particularly concerned with issues of usability, and so dabbles in the fields of user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design. He is currently collaborating with Anthony Di Fiore and Tom Igoe to develop data standards and software tools for “next-generation” primatological data management (find out more).
